written review of initial ideas

1. what are your 3 initial ideas?
My first initial is a no entry road sign, i'd like to create this piece using spray painting. The no entry would be cut out as a stencil and then spray painted green the background of the circle will be white with the red circle outline. Inside the no entry i will write enter all around.
My second initial idea would be a thought bubble created in illustrator, the word why will be placed in the middle with why quotes surrounding inside the bubble.
My third initial idea is spray painting of i am not myself, i would use neon colours and inside the writing i'd write things that make people unique such as eye colour hair colour skin colour.

2. what are you planning to do to create them?
For 2 of my initial ideas i'm going to use handmade techniques, 1 using stencil and spray paint and the other just spray paint, my other initial idea would be done digitally using illustrator or Photoshop  I will also do research into the ideas i have thought of, looking at other artists that do similar pieces for inspiration and also research relevant text and pictures that i can put together to create my piece so that it is unique and have made me own developments and researched the artists independently.

3. who have you researched to develop your ideas?
I've researched first and fifteenth and Marcelo Schultz to develop my ideas I've also gathered primary research and taken photos of graffiti in Camden and South bank  i'm also going to research other artists that are more relevant and specific to my initial ideas rather than the above artists as they were just an overview of typography as a whole. I think when i research these other artists it will help me develop and change my ideas for the better so i can make improvements where i think necessary.

4. how have you explored a range of ideas around your theme within your experiments? what are they? how have they informed your ideas?
I have formed my initial ideas by returning to previous experiments and furthering the development on them, I've also done independent research and new experiments to see what techniques i like and what i would enjoy creating. I've also made mind maps of different techniques and saying and expressions to help chose the best that would go together. In my initial ideas i also had to think about what would hold me back from using this technique as certain problems could arise. To get an idea of the techniques i would be using and how comfortable and confident i would feel using them i found tutorials from artists of similar pieces and adapted them so it would fit with my piece.

5. have you refined/developed your ideas through experiments? how?
I've developed my ideas through experiments by using the tutorials i found to my advantage and changing relevant parts of the piece to suit my ability and what i think i would be confident in completing. Hopefully this will prove to my advantage as if i am more comfortable and confident it will reflect in my work. Also i think the practice and experiment would help with this as the practice and repetition will allow me to identify anything i will struggle with in creating my final piece.

6. have you annotated, in detail, your experiments and developments in your sketchbook/blog and used this information to help you improve?
I used my sketchbook more than my blog to document my experiments and developments annotating as i went along and doing several in depth analysis of other artists work that have inspired me in some way during my experiments. With some of the artists i research i tried to experiment with their techniques but changed them slightly to suit my ideas.

7. which idea has been most successful? why?
I think the spray painting has been the most successful because the research i did before hand inspired me more than the others did, but i didn't let that make my mind for me i continued with research and experiments and developments of the others to see if i would prefer the others. I think the inspiration of the artists definitely made me think about my initial ideas more.

8. which idea has been least successful? why?
I think my question why initial idea has been least successful as i don't think that it would have pushed my skills as much as i could and when trying to research artists it proved to be quite difficult. I think the idea would have been best done as an experiment rather than an actual initial idea.

9. which idea do you think you will choose for your final outcome? why?
I think the idea i will more than likely use for my final outcome will be the 'i am not myself' spray painting as i think this will best reflect my ability and skills and will show a better range of experiments, research and developments. I also think it would be easier to find relevant artists and look at their work and also be easier to create my own primary research and photos.

10. what else could you do to further develop this idea?
I could change the colour of spray paints i use to target at a certain audience, i could also change the scale on which i create the piece and the materials i use to spray paint onto. I could also experiment with different spray paint techniques and research different tutorials to help me in changing the way i use my spray paints to create patterns and effects.

Marcelo Schultz Indepth analysis

Marcelo Schultz

Context

This piece of work was designed by Marcelo Schultz, he's a graphic designer and illustrator based in Curitiba, South of Brazil. He works as a Art Director at DDQ Design http://www.ddq.com.br. He builds all his work from scratch and spends a lot of time drawing everything that comes to his head. This piece is an advertisement for 'Nike Just Do It' its an illustration that looks like it has been designed by hand and then transferred to photoshop and completed. I think this piece will be used as posters, advertisements and also as a design for t-shirts.

I've chosen to look at this piece because It's a good example of digital typography. I like the font and the colour scheme that has been used. The whole design is very eye catching and unusual and would therefor be great as an advertisement.

Meaning
I googled the Marcelo Schultz and looked at his other pieces of work and also the websites and reviews that have been written online about him. I also looked at the website of the company that he is Art Director of. Its clear from the piece that the theme is trainers, the design included laces and the different texture that would be on a trainer. The inspiration of this piece would be nike air max.

The subject of this piece is Nike and I think the artist has designed this piece for advertisement and retail purposes. Not only could it be the face of a new ad campaign but also printed on clothing and sold.

Aesthetic
I think that the artist has first of all planned and drafted the design on paper first using different shades of pencil, then creating the piece digitally on illustrator and/or photoshop. The different shades of any one colour gives the effect of shadow and shading in the piece the artist has created. The artist seems to use complimentary colours in his pieces these reflect that of the design that would be on the trainers. The pieces look to have been created on A3 scale but would have been decreased to fit onto a t-shirt or enlarged to fit onto billboards or posters as advertising. This would effect the way you look at the piece because the smaller the piece the more detail it would appear to have rather than that if the piece was made larger. The different layers shown in the piece make it look 3D and therefore make it more interesting to look at than if it was a 2D piece. The formal elements key with this piece are the lines and colour, the lines need to be bold and smooth in order for the piece to give the effect that is 3D the colour also contributes to this but enhances the shading and shadow that would be created from this '3D' piece.

Personal response
I chose to look at this piece because i liked the detail and the idea that the trainers are linked to the design. I like the artists use of complimentary colours and the different shades to create shadow and shading. I think the piece as a whole works really well, its eye-catching and would work well as an advertisements, the fact the artist has adjusted colours schemes would work to their advantages because then they could aim the pieces to different genders. The artist has created the work using a very imaginative approach, this has inspired me to look at his work in greater detail to find tutorials on how to get the same effect on pieces of work and is definitely a technique i would be influenced to use in further development of my work.

COURSEWORK TYPE EXPERIMENT

I tested out some bold fonts that i though would be good to use to create my stencil.

COURSEWORK FONT STRUCT

I created my own font using fontstruct and then downloaded it to the computer. I then wrote out my quote using the font i had made.
