Si Scott

This is a piece of work done by Si Scott. I think he has done his work digitally using adobe illustrator and also by hand drawing it. In some of his work he uses a gradient in colour, he starts with a dark colour on one side and get lighter throughout. The colours also blend together. The shape of this work is swirly and circular. The lines are blurred and are both a mixture of thick and thin. The form of this piece is water like and fluid as the lines flow.
I tried to create my own Si Scott inspired piece on adobe illustrator, I typed 'your love is my drug' and then used the tools to warp & swirl the writing. I think this has added a unique effect to the piece & I dont think I added too much to the writing as its still readable & clear to read.

Font Struct

I used a website called FontStruct to create my own font. I was given a grid with squares on it and was allowed to place in different shapes to create the letters. Whilst creating my font i came across some difficulties with letters such as m & w as they were going to have to be wider than the other letters. I also found it hard to create the bends in the letters. If i was to do this again I would use a different set of shapes as I dont think the spikier shapes were the best ones to c hose although it did look unique when all the alphabet was together. Next time I would want to try and complete the whole alphabet in upper case and lower case and also numbers and punctation.

caligrams

To create these caligrams I first of all sketched an outline of my chosen object which was a guitar, I then added in some of the detail shapes that I thought would be able to fit my words in. I had to think of loads of words to do with a guitar and had to repeat some them more than once when I out them into my caligram. I then scanned my original version of my caligram into illustrator &  added the different colours into it. I created 2 different versions of my caligram using different colours to represent different types of guitars. My first version uses all different shades of brown and represents a classic guitar, my seconds version uses bright bold colours and represents a rock guitar. Out of the 2 I prefer the rock guitar version as I think it stands out more and would be good used in a poster because it would be seen from a distance and would catch peoples attention. If I was to do this again I would spend more time planning the position that the words would fit in to the main shape and would also take time to think of more words to include rather than repeating the same ones.

caligram in depth analysis oscar wilson.

Oscar Wilson

This work was created by Oscar Wilson, he's London based and has been illustrating from 1996 to now. The work i called 'Totally London' its a series of different caligram pictures, that advertise places to go in London. i think the target audience for this could be tourists but also anyone who lives in London as they might not have been to everywhere in London or there might be places they don't know about. I can imagine these pictures being used a posters at train station, bus stops and tube stations and also advertising pages in magazines/newspapers. The work is a typography project, i've chosen to look at this piece because I'm looking at experimenting with work that is similar using typography as the main theme overall.

I've looked further into the understanding of his work by looking at the work on his website, from this i have discovered that he does a lot of work in advertising and even done a piece for a book cover. I think his work has a theme of representing london life, its typography work that promotes the places in London to visit.  The title of the work is 'Totally London' this obviously hints that the work is going to be about London, the fact the logo for it is a like a road sign with a postcode gives the idea the work is to do with the different places in London. The work is based on making people in London aware of all the different places they can visit. Oscar Wilson uses things that represent London e.g telephone boxes, red buses, black taxi's when he makes bis caligram's because these are things people associate with London.

I think that Owen Wilson hand drew his design before scanning it onto the computer & using adobe illustrator to add colour & make the finishing touches. I think he drafted the picture by hand several times to experiment with how the text would fit into with different sizes and fonts. Oscar Wilsons use of colour creates the illusion that from far away there is not text involves it just looks like solid colours. He uses a colour palette that represents the object he's chosen. The work he produces is not in scale with the sizes of the actual object, the picture is much smaller than in real life. The lines and colour in this work are essential as they influence the whole theme & final piece of this picture.

I chose to look at this work because Owen Wilsons 'totally london' is a good example of caligrams, the show how 1 theme can influence the picture, words, colour & fonts you use. I've discovered that even just chaining the colour scheme of the caligram can alter the overall perception of the  work. I dont  understand why Owen Wilson used a gorilla in his totally london work as everything else he used was related to London but i don't see the relevance to the gorilla. Owen Wilson's work is similar to Sarah Kings work, she also creates caligrams but hers are slightly different in the fact she uses just one colour & her caligrams are more realistic.

food typography

Food Typography

We were given 6 food products, we had to brainstorm words to describe the product that we would be able to produce. We used different coloured paper backgrounds that would emphasise certain coloured foods and changed font types throughout our experiments. it was easier to complete some foods than others as with the rice it was too small to spell something out with so we had to use the rice as a background and write into it.

My favourite piece would have to be the beans, because it fun and it works well with the extra little details we added in to it.

object typography

Object Typography

This piece is done by Vladimir Koncar i like it because he uses the object he's talking about to construct the letters. I think its effective because it unusual and you can have lots of very interesting pieces of work using things such as petals, stones, sand, soil etc.

In our work my group was given a task to experiment in the style of Vladimir Koncar, we used sticks, pegs, playing card and legoto either create 1 word or a phrase that we thought would best suite the object. I think my favourite 2 pieces would have to be our sticks & playing cards because we thought of 2 really good saying that we could use for them, i also think that the playing cards worked well with the 'joke' because we had the joker cards suit side up with the others faced down.

We found it difficult to keep the pegs together but after we'd attached them all and made the letters it looked really effective especially as wse had all the different coloured pegs mixed together.

watercolour, m&m paris and kinetic typography

M&M PARIS

this is my example of m&m paris's work. i created a clipping mask using photoshop. i took a picture of myself using photobooth. i then uploaded the picture to photoshop & changed the colour effects to black & white and also changed the contrast & brightness so i could get an equal amount of both colours. i then created another layer with the letter h, i then merged the layers and was able to move my picture around so it looked abstract. i then used different effects and added them to the picture so it was more unusual.

i like this piece because i think it looks effective in black and white an although its abstract you can still see the letter & it represents me. i also think that the added effects such as the blurring and paintbrush streaks helps add more detail to the picture.

Kinetic

i used illustrator to create the effects that the text is moving. i used blur, warp, bold, fonts and punctuation which all contributed to the making of the kinetic effects. i like this piece because you can tell a story with the text but make it seem real at the same time. it makes it more interesting to look at & with experiments i would have liked to look at including colour into the text swell, as different colours would work well together and make it more bold. i think the use of blur and warp definitely makes the text look like its moving like the kinetic typography example.
