billie jean analysis

Context
This piece was made by Billie Jean, he lives and works in Leytonstone in East London. His artwork is everywhere, trainers, books, music cd's and fashion are some of the markets his work used to promote. This pice of work has been used it seems to advertise nike trainers. The piece is a biro drawing designed on graph paper. It gives the effect of doodles, theres a lot of small detail and even some type. I chose to analyse this piece because i think the biro technique he has used would be good to experiment with as you can get a good effect off of it and it easy to make bold lines and shade with.

Meaning
It was really hard to find information about Billie Jean the only thing i could find was some basic information, but i did find his personal website, on which found several pieces of work that he has also made. It is clear from his work that he is an illustrator, this piece has a theme of sport, all the little details mostly link back to sport and this would link in because the main feature is a trainer. The artists inspiration has clearly come from a trainer made by nike, he's used it as his main focus and worked around it but keeping it as a focus point on the page which is why it could be central on the page. I think this piece could definitely be used for an advertisement its eye-catching and unusual and would therefore attract people to it.

Aesthetics
The artist has used a blue biro and created the piece on graph paper, i think the artist has used the biro lightly before making any bold harder lines, to plan out everything first. I think the artist has used to graph paper to make it look more like doodles because he hasn't used the graph paper as a guideline for his drawings. The artists uses the different shades he can create using the 1 biro to add shading the different shades of blue add more detail to the piece. I rethink the fact the artist has only used 1 colour makes the piece look more effective and more interesting to look at. The artist has coloured some of the shapes in which make the bolder than some of the others that haven't been shaded in, this just gives the piece more detail. The doodles have been overlapped the artist hasn't left that much space on the page free this makes the page look busy but its also what makes the piece effective.

Personal response
I chose to look at this piece of work because i think the technique that the artist has used is really interesting and he has produced a really bold and eye-catching piece of work using it. I think this piece would be perfect for advertising and i think this why the piece was produced. When i first saw the piece i thought it was just doodles, but after looking closer it becomes clear how much detail and thought the artist has put into it. I like the fact that the artist has created the piece on graph paper it makes the piece more interesting to look at because its not just a plain white background. The blue biro is effective and works well against the graph paper. The work has inspired me to make a biro piece myself, i will include symbols and shapes that link to the artist i have chosen.

ian wright in-depth analysis

Context
Ian Wright designed this piece of work he studied at Goldsmith's college in London and received a bachelor's degree in graphic design from the london college of printing. In 1981 Ian wright set u[p his own studio. Ian wrights's  reactive approach to illustration has resulted in a fresh and constant updating of his work into new creative directions, including testing new developments in technology and mixing up techniques and materials, whilst creating his unique visions. This piece is made from different materials and is a collage. This piece shows Ian Wrights passion for music. I chose to analyse this piece because it is a collage and i think the way the Ian Wright has used his materials works well.

Meaning
I found the artists personal website and looked at his other pieces of work that were on the internet. I also looked at the artist on wikipedia to gain more background information about him and the work he has done previously and what inspires him. From this it was clear the artists has a passion for music and this is portrayed in some pieces of his work. I couldn't find the title of this piece of work but i think has been made as a series of pieces. The work show an old style radio i think the artists has used this because it shows the stereos he would have been around when he was younger, so his childhood has influenced his work.

Aesthetics
The artists seems to use pieces of paper, i think this could have been tissue paper, cartridge paper and also certain parts of the piece have shiny bits of paper which makes the piece more interesting as it is not all one plain colour it gives the piece a unique look. I think the thought process behind the piece took a lot of time the artists has had to think about the positioning of the different kinds of paper and the colours they use, he's also had to think about the positioning of the pattern within the main piece, he could have planned it out before he started on the piece of paper he used. I think the artists would have also completed the outline of the piece before and then filled in the middle afterwards. The artists use of colour is quite dull he uses a dark yellow colour for the majority of the piece, using other colours such as blue, red and an olive green to create the app terns and the shape of the speakers inside. The black outline makes the piece looks bolder, this also gives the sense of shading in the piece.

Personal response
I chose to look at the piece because it caught my eye when looking at collage artists, I think the piece is effective it reflects the artists himself and shows his background and passion for music. I like the way he used colour because the different shades and the black gives the effective of shading. The work has inspired me to try the same technique myself but i don't think i would have the skill to add the detail into the piece like the artist has shown.

Maricor/Maricar in depth analysis

Context
This piece has been created by Maricor/Maricar they are the 'makers of things assorted'. Embroidered illustrations, lettering, animation and design are all things they create. They work from Sydney, Australia. This piece is made of embroidery, its a stencil of the word 'sale' and around the word has all been stitched using different shades of red thread. This piece seems to have been created to advertise a sale, this could be seen on posters, flyers or billboards. I chose to analyse this piece because it involves the use of embroidery.

Meaning
I researched into the artist looking at the piece of work that have been created i also looked at their profile on such websites as twitter, blog-spot and also their official website. It was hard to find some background information on the artist as their profiles didn't give much away. The pieces of work i looked at seemed to all use embroidery, some of them were embroidered illustrations and text that could have been used on clothing. This particular piece of work is clearly being used to advertise a sale but for what is unclear. The pieces of work that include text may have a deeper meaning as the illustration could mean something different to what the text says or the text could have a double meaning. I think the artist has found inspiration from simple embroidery and has changed it and made improvements to make them into interesting pieces of artwork.

Aesthetics
The artist has used a dark material onto which the piece has been embroidered on using different shades of red thread. The font of which sale has been written in look like a bold script font that has all the letters joined up which makes it look like handwriting. I think the artist would have had to plan the lines and directions on the material first as well as marking out the positioning of the word sale before being able to start the embroidery. The use of the different shades of red on the thread against the darker material ensures the embroidery stands out so you can see it clearly from a distance. The piece is simple but bold and is eye catching and for an advertisement is perfect. The use of lines and font in this piece of work are key as it changes the way you look at the piece, the lines create the detail in the embroidery.

Personal response
I chose to look at this piece because the artist uses embroidery and also because the piece is effective yet simple. My first reaction to the work was that the embroidery was just loads of lines but when you look closely it becomes obvious that the artist has included a lot more detail than is originally obvious first glance. I like the artists use of colour in the piece of work it is clear that it has been thought about as the 2 colours compliment each other. The work has inspired me to try embroidery myself although i don't think i will be able to recreate a piece with as much detail as this piece includes.

hattie stewart in depth analysis

Context
Hattie Stewart is an illustrator who works with clients such as Adidas, Diesel and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Hattie is a 23 year old illustrator who's style is favored in the fashion world, the piece is part of drawn to fashion. The piece looks to be a photograph that has been worked on top of using bold marking and lines both black and white. I think the piece could be used for advertising and could even be used for a front page of a magazine. I chose to analyse this piece because it stood out and i like the work done by the artist. The piece is unusual  and the markings on top of the photograph made it stand out.

Meaning
I researched the artist further looking at her main websites, tumblr, blog and even magazine interviews she has taken part in. I looked at other pieces of work she has created and the ones she has created for the different clients she has worked with. Most of her work includes markings which are bold and seem to be used to fill any empty space in the picture. They are used to change the original picture re-drawing the eyes, nose and mouth. In this particular piece the markings are even over the girls hands. I think there could be a deeper mean behind this piece as because this might be used for fashion the photograph is likely to be of a model. As her facial feature are covered up it gives people the opportunity to make their own assumptions of what the girl looks like.

Aesthetics
I think the artist has used a photograph and then worked into it using a pencil and then scanned the piece onto the computer. After putting the piece back onto the computer i think she worked into it digitally ontop of the original marking that were created with the pencil. This would have then allowed her to add the different colours and doodles and text and created the smoother lines in order to make the piece look more effective. The artist would not have been able to make all of the lines as smooth by creating it by hand, although from a distance the piece looks like someone has doodled over the top of the picture to deface it. The markings stand out against the picture as they are bold and the lines are thick it also helps that they are mostly black and white and they are strong and prominent colours.

Personal response
I have chosen to look at this piece because of the markings the artist has created and the distraction it creates from the original photograph. When i first saw the piece i thought someone had just doodled over the photograph but then i realized more thought had been given to it and the artist has created the markings digitally. The work has inspired me to try the technique myself and see what different i can create with it. I also believe that the hidden message behind the piece is that the artist has left the decision up to anyone who views the piece to create their own idea of what the girl in the photograph really looks like.
