hattie stewart in depth analysis

Context
Hattie Stewart is an illustrator who works with clients such as Adidas, Diesel and Marc by Marc Jacobs. Hattie is a 23 year old illustrator who's style is favored in the fashion world, the piece is part of drawn to fashion. The piece looks to be a photograph that has been worked on top of using bold marking and lines both black and white. I think the piece could be used for advertising and could even be used for a front page of a magazine. I chose to analyse this piece because it stood out and i like the work done by the artist. The piece is unusual  and the markings on top of the photograph made it stand out.

Meaning
I researched the artist further looking at her main websites, tumblr, blog and even magazine interviews she has taken part in. I looked at other pieces of work she has created and the ones she has created for the different clients she has worked with. Most of her work includes markings which are bold and seem to be used to fill any empty space in the picture. They are used to change the original picture re-drawing the eyes, nose and mouth. In this particular piece the markings are even over the girls hands. I think there could be a deeper mean behind this piece as because this might be used for fashion the photograph is likely to be of a model. As her facial feature are covered up it gives people the opportunity to make their own assumptions of what the girl looks like.

Aesthetics
I think the artist has used a photograph and then worked into it using a pencil and then scanned the piece onto the computer. After putting the piece back onto the computer i think she worked into it digitally ontop of the original marking that were created with the pencil. This would have then allowed her to add the different colours and doodles and text and created the smoother lines in order to make the piece look more effective. The artist would not have been able to make all of the lines as smooth by creating it by hand, although from a distance the piece looks like someone has doodled over the top of the picture to deface it. The markings stand out against the picture as they are bold and the lines are thick it also helps that they are mostly black and white and they are strong and prominent colours.

Personal response
I have chosen to look at this piece because of the markings the artist has created and the distraction it creates from the original photograph. When i first saw the piece i thought someone had just doodled over the photograph but then i realized more thought had been given to it and the artist has created the markings digitally. The work has inspired me to try the technique myself and see what different i can create with it. I also believe that the hidden message behind the piece is that the artist has left the decision up to anyone who views the piece to create their own idea of what the girl in the photograph really looks like.
